National Honor Society is an honors group rather than a club.  Members are accepted on the basis of SCHOLARSHIP (grade point average), LEADERSHIP (influential roles in clubs and activities), CHARACTER (high morals, values, and positive attitude), and SERVICE (active in school and community functions).

The chance to be accepted comes only once a year and is open to any Sophomore, Junior or Senior student with a grade point average of at least 3.75 cumulative.  If eligible and interested, the candidate must fill out an application which is reviewed by five selected faculty members and on the basis of that, is either accepted or not.  This procedure for selection starts with the notification of grade eligible students in late August.  Once the selection process is complete, the adviser meets with the group to explain the induction banquet that would happen with in a week or two.  This induction banquet takes place on a Sunday evening and all members and parents are invited.  New members are inducted and present members are recognized.  First year members received a "letter," second year members receive a "pin," and senior or three year members receive a "bar."

Newly inducted members must perform 25 hours of volunteer time before the end of the present school year.  Current members must perform 50 hours of volunteer service by the end of the present school year or by graduation, if a senior.

The Athens High School Chapter of National Honor Society is high involved with the community of Athens.  Most volunteer projects are community based, such as raking leaves for Make a Difference Day and ringing the bell for the Salvation Army.
