4th graders have been busy this past month learning about Wisconsin’s land regions in social studies class. Students made their own homemade clay, shaped it into the shape of Wisconsin and then once the clay dried, students drew the 5 land regions and painted them! To finish off their clay maps, students then made their legend/key to show what color was each land region and added a compass. They did a great job and had fun learning in a hands-on way even at home!!! You can make the clay at home as well. Here is the recipe. -1 cup salt -1 cup flour -1/2 cup water -2 Tablespoons vegetable oil Mix together well. The clay should have a consistency of play-dough (you may need to add additional flour). Enjoy :)

School District of Athens
As a follow-up to yesterday’s Closure Notice, the Athens School District would like to provide additional details which we are able to share at this time . . .As of Friday, September 25, the School District of Athens had a total of 3 students and 1 staff member who had been quarantined and all returned safely back to school. However, during the week of September 28, we began to see an increased number of students and staff who needed to be quarantined. By Friday, October 2, we were up to 36 students and 9 staff who had been/were quarantined so far this year including 2 staff who tested positive for COVID-19. Over the weekend more staff (1 coach and 1 certified) tested positive for COVID-19 and each staff member had been in first level contact with 21 students (including some from parochial schools)/2 staff and 26 students/3 staff members, respectively. This brought our count to approximately 83 students and 14 staff for a total of 97 people affected. In addition, we have more staff and students being tested Monday, October 5 after showing symptoms, so our numbers could increase further. Our number one priority during this pandemic is to keep our students and staff safe from testing positive for the COVID-19 virus. We have done everything we can to model safe practices in our schools, yet the virus still reached Athens and hit us hard this past week and weekend. In order to allow everyone to remain safe and virus-free, we believe it is safest to err on the side of caution and move to a temporary two-week virtual learning model which will allow us time to clean and sanitize our schools so we can open back up on Monday, October 19 with a full population of students and staff who are all alive and well!

Calling all avid sewers and seamstresses: The Athens band program needs your help to make full band rehearsals possible! In addition to the preventative measures already taken for this coming school year, there are more ways still to make music rehearsals even safer for your child. According to a study led by University of Colorado Boulder, students will need to have a covering for the bell of their instrument to prevent aerosol particles from escaping. One of the most effective materials for a cover like this is close-weave cotton (Ex: 300 count bed sheets). If you can support the Athens band by making these “instrument masks,” please contact Mr. Puffer at spuffer@athens1.org, so our students can enjoy making music for you once again! Good Wednesday afternoon Band parents and students! Just a reminder to sanitize your instruments before playing them! Here are a couple tips: 1. Use sterilizing spray on the case, but make sure it is safe for the cloth and foam inside! 2. Sanitizing wipes can work on just about everything outside of wooden instruments. To check if an instrument is truly wooden, check the inside for grain marks. Some manufacturers add false grains to make it look wooden. That’s all for today, but keep ‘practicing’ good sanitizing measures to keep those covid blues at bay! Until next time, Mr. Puffer
