Students at Athens Middle School had the opportunity through their English classes to enter the "Patriot's Pen" essay contest for The VFW Auxiliary. This year's theme was "How are you inspired by America?" Local winners were eighth-graders Ted Schultz-Becker, first place, and Itzel Espinoza, runner-up. Schultz-Becker and Espinoza were given awards by the VFW Auxiliary Patriot's Pen chairmen Mrs. Denise Sekorski and Mrs. Gloria Lavicka. Mrs. Dee Brewster is their English teacher. Their certificates stated that they are "outstanding youth spokespeople of the future."

It was another busy weekend for the Athens High School National Honor Society (NHS). This past weekend, the members rang the bell for the Salvation Army of Marathon County. In five shifts, the group raised over $325 to donate. Many thanks go out to the businesses in the village of Athens who let the group ring at their storefront.
