AES 4K and families learned about our 5 senses during our Friday Family Focus event. Families learned how our 5 sense help students learn about the world around us through curiosity, exploration, cause and effect and self regulation. Students and families engaged in listening to a story read by Mrs. Hartwig, making a leaf rubbing collage, and enjoyed the beautiful weather by going on a fall senses scavenger hunt.
First graders in Mrs. Nowak's class have been learning about insects. In addition to learning many facts about insects, they had the opportunity to watch a black swallowtail butterfly caterpillar turn into a chrysalis. Students created their own diagrams of insects and labeled the major body parts. They enjoyed learning about these amazing creatures!
Athens Elementary was the fortunate recipient of a service project by the Pack 350 Arrow of Light Den. The 5th graders members cleaned the playground area by relocating wood and rubber playground chips back to their designated areas after many recesses of serious play! The scouts are completing their final year of the Cub Scout program and will be bridging into the Troop with Scouting BSA early next year. AES gives a shout of gratitude to the troop members, their leaders, and parents for supporting their efforts in our community!
Last Friday was AES’ first 4K Family Focus event! The focus was on the importance of reading and asking questions while reading aloud. This helps build oral language skills. Athens Librarian, Kitty, read to the class in the morning and then in the afternoon, Mrs. Hartwig modeled reading as she reread the story to students and “Grand-pals”. Grand-pals then had a chance to cozy up with a book and 4K students to practice the joy of reading and language. October 23rd will be the next Grand-pal event!

Next week the elementary building has parent teacher conferences Tuesday and Thursday. The hall will still be open and available to walk in, we ask that you just be mind full of others using the building on those days. A quick reminder that if there is no school the halls will not be open to the community for walking. Please use the district calendar as a guide.
Mrs. Hartwig's preschoolers were busy celebrating Thanksgiving with hands on early literacy and math activities.

Mrs. Hartwig's preschoolers each made their own Mat Man. Mat Man is made of big lines, small lines, big curves and small curves that help the students learn how letters in the alphabet are formed.

AES 4th graders traveled to Madison for annual trip to the capitol and Veterans Museum.
The first graders at AES enjoyed a field trip to NTC, the NTC farm, and to Jo Jo's Jungle. They learned about careers that help a community, the importance of farms, and how fun it is to spend time with friends.
AES 4th graders met our local Representative Karen Hurd. We learned about her job and how she works on bills that will hopefully become laws.

The fourth graders at AES helped plant trees with Athens Trail Association members Steve B and Lynn L today. We planted many red pine and sugar maple trees in Erbach park.
The 4th graders at AES went back in time to 1904. They enjoyed a day at the Little Red School House. They wrote on slate boards, printed with indie ink and quill like pens, learned geography for that time period, participated in a spelling bee and did classroom chores. A great and memorable time was had by all!
