On Friday, Maple Grove Charter School learners participated in a study of the Big Rib River at Amco Park with the help of our outdoor experience guide, Sandy Benton. Second, fourth, and fifth grade classes gained hands-on experience while investigating our local ecosystem and the creatures that inhabit it. Learners will use this knowledge to consider the health and conservation of our local water systems.

Ms Etten’s 1st graders at Maple Grove Charter School had Sandy Benton from FieldEdventures to help them learn how to identify maple trees based on the branches, bark, and leaves. After identifying maple trees, students were able to use new tools to measure and flag. They definitely enjoyed being able to use an open reel tape measure and flag tape more than many toys. I love the learning that can take place in the outdoors at a school like Maple Grove. I have no doubt it will be exciting for them to journal about their tree throughout the changing of seasons! Now the waiting game….. many of them were wanting to tap their trees as soon as next week 😊🪵🍁📝

Ms Barrick's third graders at Maple Grove Charter School with the help of Sandy Benton from FieldEdventures designed frog/toad houses and pit traps after evaluating if the locations on the school property would be suitable for meeting their species' basic needs. They will continue to monitor and survey throughout next week and journal their observations. **Disclaimer: The pit traps were not left over the weekend due to ethic reasons.
MGCS 4th graders had a great first week building our classroom community and learning about the natural world around us. We are so ready for a great year ahead of us!

The littlest foxes at MGCS are starting the year strong! Within the welcoming school forest, students engaged in an activity that targeted name & letter recognition, fine motor skills, and perseverance. The possibilities are endless in this environment! 🦊

During outdoor labs on Friday our 5th graders are learning about water sheds. They needed to pretend they were in a survival situation and how they could trap water to survive. They were given a variety of methods and limited materials and tools to create their water collection. The methods included Rain traps,Transpiration, Dew Traps, or solar stills. They teamed up with a partner and started brainstorming and creating. Over the weekend their traps were tested and they went to see the results today and how well they held up and who trapped the most water. Later in the year they will continue the learning on how to filter the water for clean drinking water.

The outdoors offers limitless potential to young children. It becomes a place where they can go to relax their mind, to be inspired, and to deep dive into the world of imagination. It’s a place where they can design, create, and explore. The possibilities are endless.

Learners explore those endless possibilities at MGCS during recess.

At MGCS we started our outdoor labs today with our Field Edventures expert, Sandy Benton! These labs will occur almost every Friday throughout the year and further learning to prepare for our Friday experiences will occur during the week. Each classes labs last about 90 min. This part of our curriculum connects to our science and literacy standards and ties in with our literacy curriculum. We are thrilled to have Sandy a part of our family! This is funded through our new implementation grant we received over the next 4 years.

What a fantastic first day at Maple Grove Charter School! We welcomed returning and new learners into our doors today, and we are excited for all the adventures ahead for the 2022-2023 school year! We are looking forward to seeing all the kindergartener’s smiling faces tomorrow 😊
