Our first graders at Maple Grove Charter School have been learning about birds throughout their literacy modules. They had the opportunity to incubate chicken eggs and some even come right from our own chickens we take care of here at Maple Grove. Our eggs are on 'lock down' this week and are set to hatch by Friday, and we couldn't be more excited! Feel free to watch this process unfold on our Chicken Live Cam over the next couple of days: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECF-5xTBhBk

After analyzing high-quality presentations and lots of research, 2nd graders at MGCS presented on their chosen plant and pollinator to the 1st graders during their Celebration of Learning. They dressed up and worked through some nerves to deliver important information. The neatest quote their teacher overheard was a 1st grader asking a 2nd grader, "Wow! How do you know all of that?" The 2nd grader replied, "Research!" It is truly amazing to be part of their growth since the beginning of the year!

What an "egg-citing" week in 1st grade at Maple Grove Charter School. We are fortunate to have so many outdoor learning experiences and that is just what the week was once again about. Not only did we wrap up the 2023 maple syrup season, but the first grade learners began their incubation of baby chicks. A majority of the eggs are from our very own MCGS chicken coop! Learners will be hands on in taking responsibility of the incubation by using the School Crisp traits. The 21 day process will include documentation of the temperature and humidity, observation based journal entries, and discussion of the challenges and successes of the process. Thank you to the Bergman family, owners of Haymeadow farms for helping make this learning experience come to life in the first grade classroom at Maple Grove Charter School. We truly can not wait for the excitement that these next 21 days hold leading up to hatching day🐣🐥

"That's a wrap" for this year's Maple Grove Charter School's maple sap season. Students worked on undoing and recycling their collection bags, on removing taps & marking tape and on repurposing the spoiled sap back to living things during Outdoor Labs. Our school collected a total of 11,195 gallons of sap and the average sugar content was 2.3 Brix. Therefore, we had a 37.4:1 ratio. This equates to approximately 299.3 gallons of syrup. Cheers to many future pancake breakfasts!

Learners in every grade were taught about “inverted” art and how colors can be flipped to their opposite through a phone or ipad. Each learner created a different type of bird that is meant to be seen through a device as the colors flip. This art show was a big hit at Maple Grove's open house!

Just like students, adults need engagement as well to get hard things done! Maple Grove Charter School Staff took a break 1/2 way through our professional learning day to collect sap. To keep staff motivated they had to find Easter Eggs throughout the woods as they collected 🐰 It was a great team building experience!

From sap to syrup, learners had the opportunity to watch the process unfold today over the open pan! Wish we could of captured that amazing smell as it turns to syrup and share it with each one of you! A huge shout out goes to Mr. Bloch and one of our grandparents, Mr, Engel for their time and talent to cook this down for us today, much appreciated!
